Event Overview
Housing is one of the most prominent domestic issues in Britain, with the quality, quantity and distribution of housing a persistent subject of analysis, proposals and policies. According to Full Fact, the amount of new build homes being built has slumped to the lowest levels in almost a century. However, recent efforts are starting to see a reversal in this trend.
An uptick in recent years of new-build housing levels saw the annual supply in England reach 222,190 net additional dwellings in 2017-18, up 2% on 2016-17, with over 170,000 new homes being built for the year ending June 2019. How we define and develop houses is also undergoing revision: new concepts in housing such as modern methods of construction and the green housing revolution, and policy reviews such as the Social Housing Green Paper and the ‘Building Beautiful: Building Better’ Commission are exploring broad issues in the quality of housing tenancy, planning, development and design.
Furthermore, the expansion of the private housing sector to meet the shortage of housing presents many challenges and opportunities for the sector, with housing associations, developers, local authorities and government needing to collaborate to improve standards, tackle rogue landlords, and ensure the safety and security of tenants. While efforts such as the Tenant Fees Act 2019 and the rogue landlord database are helping to regulate the private rented sector, there is more to be done.
Join us at The Future of Housing Services 2020 to hear from leading experts who will explain the implications of the latest policy changes. The event will also feature case studies from local authorities and housing associations that are implementing innovative best-practice and working to tackle the most critical issues facing the housing sector.
